The Pick n Pay School Club is widely acknowledged as one of the
country’s most dynamic and successful channels through which schools benefit from
business participation in the education of the adults of tomorrow. The Pick n Pay
School Club programme is currently in its fifth year. As in the past, the programme
is dedicated to facilitating meaningful relationships between Pick n Pay, the initiative’s
co-sponsors, government, schools and their local communities.
The integrated result is a platform that delivers much-needed educational support
in a meaningful and value-adding way. Experience over the years has confirmed that
schools are hungry for new and innovative approaches to deliver the prescribed educational
curriculum. They also crave financial support from the private sector. Judging by
the number of repeat registrations and the growth in school participants, the Pick
n Pay School Club fulfils both needs via this single, highly successful platform.

The 2008 Pick n Pay School Club is structured in four core components:
- The Innovate-It Challenge: Sponsored by Nedbank, the Innovate-It Challenge
is an entrepreneurial development programme that encourages learners to develop
a new product or service that supports the environment and/or community in some
way.
- The Design-It Challenge: Co-sponsored by Proudly South African, the Design-It
Challenge brings the world of advertising to life in the school environment.
- It’s My Choice Challenge: Designed to nurture learners’ ability to care
for others, the It’s My Choice Challenge nurtures emotional intelligence
by teaching decision-making skills that youngsters can apply to all aspects of their
lives.
It focuses on three developmental areas:
- Healthy Body: Co-sponsored by Pick n Pay Fresh Produce, Aquafresh, Scott’s
Emulsion and Dettol, the Healthy Body component places emphasis on good nutritional
habits and personal grooming.
- Healthy Mind: Eskom is the co-sponsor of this project component, empowering
young minds through innovative thinking.
- Healthy World: This project component is dedicated to increasing environmental
awareness and conservation practices, as well as instilling community and social
support.
- Youth Consumer Board (YCB): This is a unique platform for educating
young consumers on their consumer rights. The YCB also allows Pick n Pay
to demonstrate its belief in the importance of consumer education and the company’s
commitment to South Africa’s future leaders.
Each of the four components has two core elements: educational material (comprising
lesson content plus worksheets and posters) and activity-based competitions, with
awesome cash prizes of up to R150,000 at stake. All schools that register for the
programme receive a campaign kit with detailed instructions for effective implementation
(the educational material is also available online). Additional support is provided
throughout the school year by way of teacher-training workshops and talks on the
Pick n Pay School Club for learners.

The 2008 Pick n Pay School Club hopes to identify and reward schools
across South Africa that pro-actively nurture a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship
while simultaneously equipping their learners to make responsible decisions regarding
every aspect of their daily lives – from nutrition and exercise, through inter-personal
relationships and behaviour patterns, to the environment and communities in which
they live.
|
- Set an objective and measure the success of the campaign against the objective;
for example, “Our aim was to make our learners aware of the plight of old people
to ensure that old people are treated with more respect. We further aim to raise
R5,000 to provide to the Old Age Home.”
- Involvement of learners and community
- Learning outcomes achieved
- Photos, materials utilised, samples, DVD/video, worksheets
- Letter of thanks and/or testimonial from learners and/or stakeholders
- Use of partner’s logos provided
- Place documents in a file or on a poster as a scrapbook and send before 20 August
