Pick n Pay Fresh Produce and 5-a-Day
Launched in September 1995, the 5-a-Day for Better Health Trust is a non-profit organization with a sound science backing which aims, through education and promotion, to increase the consumption of fresh vegetables and fruit (to at least five servings per person per day) in South Africa in order to promote better health.
Why?
The major benefit of adopting a lifestyle that includes at least 5-a-Day is not only significant long-term savings on health costs but improved health for all, young and old, rich and poor.
The benefits of following the 5-a-Day eating programme have been proven in research studies around the world, and a global expert consultation recently assessed the strength of evidence for the relationship between vegetables and fruit intake and health, concluding that:
...with an increased consumption of these foods, there is convincing evidence of reduced risk of heart disease, a probable reduced risk of certain cancers, diabetes and obesity, as well as an association with the prevention and alleviation of several micronutrient deficiencies.
Jane Badham, CEO of 5-a-Day for Better Health Trust
It is not surprising then that around the world, there is a drive, led by the World Health Organisation (WHO), to get people to eat more vegetables and fruit. Our own Department of Health has made the 5-a-Day for Better Health Trust its official partner in getting the 5-a-Day message ‘Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit every day for better health’ out to all South Africans.
5-a-Day is also a founding and active member of the International Fruit and Vegetable Alliance.
