Happy Human Rights Day! Today’s a day to commemorate the lives lost in the fight for our democracy. Everyone living in South Africa has rights and that includes children. But with rights also come responsibilities. Here are a few responsibilities young people should know and keep in mind.

  1. FAMILY CARE, LOVE AND PROTECTION

You have the right to family care, love and protection. Your responsibility is to show that love, respect and caring to others, especially the elderly. Don’t bully or intimidate others.

  1. A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT

You have the right to a clean environment but it’s your responsibility to take care it by cleaning the space you live in and not littering.

  1. FOOD AND QUALITY MEDICAL CARE

You have the right to food. Your responsibility is to not be wasteful with it. You’ve got the right to quality medical care and it’s your responsibility to take care of yourself. Don’t participate in irresponsible behaviour.

  1. GOOD QUALITY EDUCATION

You have the right to not just an education but a good quality education. It’s up to you to ensure you’re responsible enough to learn. Make sure you attend school regularly and work hard. Co-operate with your teachers, peers and adhere to the school rules and the Code of Conduct.

  1. PROTECTION FROM EXPLOITATION AND NEGLECT

You’ve got the right to protection from any type of exploitation and neglect. Your responsibility is to make sure that you report any abuse or exploitation.
