Let’s make a broom!

Mrs Jhagroo from Wembley Primary School together with learners (from left to right) Owais Hassen, Jermaine Kisten and Nandeni Govender made a broom using recyclable products from Pick n Pay.

Steps:

  1. Remove the label on your empty plastic bottle.
  2. Remove the bottom of the bottle with a penknife.
  3. Measure the distance between each cut (about 1 cm).
  4. Cut the bottle into strips.
  5. Remove the neck with a penknife.
  6. Cut the top of another bottle.
  7. Fit parts without the neck, one by one over the part with the neck.
  8. Fit the top over the base of the broom.
  9. Drill two holes and insert the wire through all layers of bottles.
  10. Pull the wire to the other side.
  11. Twist the ends to fasten.
  12. Secure parts with a nail.
  13. Drink your milk so you have an empty milk carton.
  14. Clean your milk carton thoroughly.
  15. Cut it into strips and wrap it around the broom handle.
  16. Secure it with tape.

Your broom is ready!!
